How to Find Your Lifting Belt Size

Getting your belt size right matters more than most people think, especially on a non-refundable custom order. Two minutes with a tape measure before you order will save you a remake.

Step 1: Choose Your Belt Type

Gunsmith belts come in two styles, and sizing works slightly differently between them.

Olympic Style
Tapers from 4" wide at the back to a narrower front. Designed for freedom of movement. Suits Olympic lifting, CrossFit, and dynamic training.

Powerlifting Style
The same width all the way around. Maximum support for heavy squats and deadlifts. Preferred by powerlifters and strength athletes.

Step 2: Choose Your Thickness

6/7mm: Our most popular option. Stiff enough to provide real support, flexible enough to break in quickly. Recommended for most lifters.

10mm: Firmer and more rigid. Preferred by experienced powerlifters moving serious weight. Takes longer to break in.

Step 3: Measure Your Waist

Use a flexible tape measure. Measure around your navel, not your trouser waist, not the narrowest part of your torso.

  • Stand up straight
  • Pull the tape measure tight — but do not breathe in
  • Record the measurement in inches

If you train in a thick hoodie or layers, add 1 inch to your measurement.

Step 4: Find Your Size

Size Inches (around navel) CM
XS 21" – 26" 53cm – 66cm
S 25" – 30" 64cm – 76cm
M 29" – 34" 74cm – 86cm
L 33" – 38" 84cm – 97cm
XL 37" – 42" 94cm – 107cm
XXL 41" – 46" 104cm – 117cm
XXXL 45" – 50" 114cm – 127cm

For prong belts, aim to be near the middle of your size range, this gives you the most adjustment variance. For lever belts, aim for the middle of the range to avoid excess belt bunching uncomfortably underneath the buckle.

Step 5: Check the Fit When It Arrives

Put your belt on over your training clothes, positioned at your navel.

  • You should be able to fit one to two fingers between the belt and your body
  • Brace against the belt, breathe in and push your core outward into it. Do not suck your stomach in and crank it as tight as possible. That defeats the purpose of wearing a belt.
  • The belt should feel firm when braced, not restrictive when relaxed.
